Call for action to improve Streatham's shopfronts4.46.35pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 14th Sep 2009
Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson Chris Nicholson is calling on Lambeth Council to work with Streatham shopkeepers to improve the look of shopfronts along Streatham High Rd and Streatham Hill. "At a time when many local businesses are suffering at the hands of the recession, we must do everything we can to improve the look of the High Road to attract shoppers again. There are over 80 empty shops on the High Road according to the last count, and it is time to stop the trend." Chris commented. "The environmental improvement works are a start but much more needs to be done. When the Liberal Democrats ran Lambeth Council there was a very successful scheme to help fund shopfront improvements." "Improving the pavements through tree planting and new paving will not be enough, we need another scheme to improve the shopfronts as well", he added.
